New free-to-play TPS announced from the devs of The Darkness 2

Digital Extremes, the developers of The Darkness 2, announced today that they will be bringing us a new free-to-play third person shooter, Warframe. Warframe is set in the far reaches of space in a “new Dark Age”. The Tenno, now on the brink of extinction, have been enslaved by the Grineer for centuries. Player’s will enter into Warframe just as the tide turns in favor of the Tenno. Having found an ancient exo-skeleton technology that only they can use, the WARFRAME’s, the Tenno fight back from the cusp of defeat.
Warframe was described in the press release as a “a fast-action PvE shooter” that includes “MMO-Lite” elements, such as creating raiding parties to delve into dungeons. Players will raid new areas of space in order to find new, more powerful weapons or WARFRAME augmentations. It sounds as if finding, upgrading, or purchasing new Warframe’s will be central to the game’s mechanics. I wouldn’t worry much about the actual gameplay mechanics much, however, as Digital Extremes is no stranger to online shooters, having helped Epic with the Unreal series of games.
If you remember, the original Dark Sector concept was eerily similar to this. The chief creative director at Digital Extremes, Steve Sinclair, confirmed this is in the press release. ”WARFRAME is a new name for an old game,” explained Sinclair. “It was a shelved concept we kept coming back to. High-tech machine-gun Ninjas set in a far-future, over-hyphenated, Manga-Dune mash-up. Free-to-play lets us take risks. It allows us to build WARFRAME with our players.”
Check out the video below, and if you’re as stoked as I am, you should consider signing up for the closed Beta test this Fall. By visiting the site, here, you can reserve your in-game alias, as well as receive a Beta exclusive weapon. I, for one, can’t wait to hear more. What are your thoughts on WARFRAME so far?
WARFRAME is tentatively scheduled for release near year-end 2012.
