hyrulewar-titleNintendo revealed a new Zelda spin-off from Tecmo Koei, as well as a new character in the next Super Smash Bros. in their last Nintendo Direct broadcast of 2013.

In a surprise announcement, Nintendo Co. Ltd. CEO Satoru Iwata revealed Hyrule Warriors (working title), a spin-off of the “Warriors” series that began with Dynasty Warriors on the original Playstation. This reveal opened the Nintendo Direct live webcast on Wednesday morning. Following that, Iwata discussed the new 3DS title Kirby Triple Deluxe.

The latest entry in the platforming series will have multi-layered stages to take advantage of the stereoscopic effect. Kirby can jump between the different layers at certain points, similar to the indie hit Mutant Mudds, which began as an eShop title. He will also gain four new abilities, including a beetle suit and bow and arrow.

The two additional modes alluded to by the title “Triple Deluxe” are a Smash Bros.-esque multiplayer mode called Kirby FIghters, which features 10 different abilities with their own movesets. The video didn’t seem to clarify whether it was local-only or had an online component. The other is a rhythm-platforming hybrid starring Kirby’s archrival King Dedede called Dedede’s Drum Dash. Kirby Triple Deluxe hits the 3DS in 2014.

Iwata-san also discussed the upcoming Yoshi’s Island sequel on the 3DS. Takashi Tezuka, the director of the original Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island is overseeing the project, which will arrive in spring 2014. The game uses 2D background similar in style to the old games, but 3D polygonal sprites for characters.

A new eShop exclusive will be hitting the 3DS on January 9. Chibi Robo is making a return in Chibi Robo: Photo Finder. This time around the miniature automaton is collecting exhibits for a museum. Players can add exhibits by taking photos of objects around their house with the 3DS camera. You can also earn different outfits by participating in community events that focus on certain objects. Chibi Robo: Photo Finder releases January 9.

Iwata also discussed two upcoming Pokémon titles, Pokémon Bank, a utility which houses up to 3000 Pokémon, and Pokémon Transporter, which will allow players to transfer creatures caught in Black White as well as Black & White Version 2 into the new & Y versions. These will hit the eShop on December 27, with a free trial available until Janurary 31. Anyone using Pokémon Transporter will also get the grass-psychic type Celebi for free until September of next year.

Next, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime discussed the upcoming 3DS RPG Bravely Default. He talked about the Street Pass features, that allow you to recruit warriors from other players’ systems and gain “Sleep Points” while the system is in standby, which can heal or revive allies, or allow use of special attacks. SP Potions can also be purchased for real money on the eShop. A demo featuring a side story not in the full game will be released January 2, with the full game following on February 7.

Iwata-san then returned to discuss Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. He went over Dixie and Cranky Kong’s new abilities to use their ponytail and cane, respectively, and the new enemies, the viking-like Snomads. He also revealed new dual powers which turn enemies into powerups such as coins or balloons. The game drops February 21.

Iwata also announced some downloadable content available immediately, which included a Yoshi’s Island Zone for Sonic: Lost World, Golf in Wii Sports Club, and a new Wii U eShop title called NES Remix, a Wario-Ware styled mix of sixteen original Nintendo Entertainment System games. He also discussed Dr. Luigi, a sequel to the Wiiware launch title Dr. Mario Online Rx. A new mode features L-shaped blocks instead of pills. Dr. Luigi hits the Wii U eshop on December 31.

Finally, a new trailer for the next Super Smash Bros. title was shown, which revealed a new character, Rosalina and her companion, Luma. They also showed a trailer for Mario Kart 8 featuring an airport track and showed off the new buggy-style carts. Mario Kart 8 is scheduled for a spring release while Smash Bros. is still TBA 2014.

Mojang has also hinted towards Playstation specific skins but they haven’t confirmed their development.

Minecraft is also in development for the Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita versions but no details have been announced.

The Nintendo Of America president appeared on the VGX awards show Saturday to announce new details about Retro’s upcoming Wii U platforemer.

During Spike TV’s annual video game awards show, Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO of Nintendo of America, Ltd. appeared on a segment to promote the upcoming sequel to 2010′s Wii hit, Donkey Kong Country Returns. In addition to confirming a release date of February 21, he officially announced that the loveable old curmudgeon Cranky Kong will be the fourth playable character. He joins Dixie Kong as a newcomer to Retro Studios’ take on the series.

The character had previously been hinted at in a box art image leaked on Amazon, but this was the first time the character was formerly announced. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze retains the two player co-op from the previous game, but ups the visuals with a new HD presentation and dynamic camera. When asked why they decided to return to the series so soon, Retro was quoted as saying that they still had many ideas left after completing the first game, so they asked to immediately work on a sequel for the Wii U.

Are you interested to see Retro do another Donkey Kong game? Is it enough to make you consider a Wii U purchase? Be sure to let us know below in the comments!

In an interview with Famitsu, Hideo Kojima explains why he decided to split MGS V into two parts.

Metal Gear series creator, Hideo Kojima, spoke with Famitsu about various topics concerning the development of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

As you all may know, MGS V was split into two separate games, Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain. While GZ will be arriving sometime next year, TPP will take a lot more time to develop and won’t be releasing anytime soon.

“However, The Phantom Pain has enormous volume, so it will require much more time,” says Kojima.
Kojima also explains that he simply wanted to release MGS V earlier but because of its lengthy development, the team had to split it into two separate games.
“It would’ve actually been better to release it all at once, but by the way things are going, it appears likely that Phantom Pain will be coming out around the time the PlayStation 4 becomes more spread out. That means we would’ve had to make people wait a while longer.”
What do you think about this? Would you prefer if MGS V was sold as a whole or are separate games? Let us know.

The Wii U’s must-have title finally arrives. But is it enough to tip the scales in the system’s favour?

Trying to put into words just what makes a Super Mario game fun is, if nothing, a daunting task. I have seen the word “fun” pop up into just about every review I’ve read of the game, or even when it is mentioned in passing. When someone attempts to concisely state just why Super Mario 3D World is a good video game, their answer is often “It’s just so fun.” I think that most of that fun comes from the sense of discovery that it creates. Ever since the beginning back in 1985, there was something that set Super Mario Bros. apart from every piece of software typified as a “video game” that came before it.

PLATFORM: Wii U
DEVELOPER: EAD Tokyo
PUBLISHER: Nintendo
RELEASE DATE: 22/11/2013

The Mushroom Kingdom was an ever-evolving, ever-changing place. Play through the game a second time, and you’ll discover things you didn’t before, be it something small like a coin hidden in a block or something huge like a hidden path that allows you to skip multiple words. This game existed in an era before the internet. Secrets like these took time to uncover, and the social aspect of relating your experiences to your peers, comparing notes, and sharing secrets was incredibly important. This created a living, breathing world that was different every time you visited it.

Mario-3DW-01

Super Mario 3D World exists in a different time, both for the world and for Nintendo. These social aspects have evolved, both through the gaming community on the internet, and through Nintendo’s own online infrastructure, which I’ll come back to later. But the game exists in a strangely similar situation: Nintendo has launched a new, unproven console that is exists in a highly competitive environment. In the 80’s the threat was arcades, today it’s tablets and smartphones.

The casual market that helped the Wii lead the last generation for years have left in droves for touch devices, and the general public remains largely either confused or apathetic about the Wii U. This game needs to do what Nintendo Land failed to: show people why they need to upgrade to a new system and a new controller. It needs to show them why the Gamepad makes a game better, and provide a significantly better visual experience to prove that this is in fact a new system with substantially more computing power than the Wii. Super Mario 3D World certainly succeeds at the latter, and it does accomplish the former…sometimes.

Mario-3DW-05
There are moments in the game when using the touch screen to flick an enemy or shake something out of a tree felt great, when blowing away a group of tiny goombas by literally blowing on your controller seemed novel at first, but after a while it became my first impulse. Other times it feels more forced, making me shift my focus to the Gamepad in order to manipulate platforms so that my character could progress through certain levels.

But overall, this is a great way of showcasing how these extra bells and whistles on the controller really do make the world feel more alive, if used correctly. I feel like I can go back and play through the entire game just on the Gamepad, and rather than focusing on the platforming, testing out every little nook and cranny by manipulating it in some way I never could before I had this controller, and have a totally different experience.

Mario-3DW-06

When you realize that, I think that you can agree that this game is the killer app the Wii U has been waiting for; the game that actually shows me why this giant controller is better than what I’ve used before. It brings that precise level of interaction you expect from a traditional gamepad, but it also allows you to interact with the game world in a way that previously was only possible with touch-only devices. They may not be completely necessary but they definitely add to the experience. And, except for a very small selection of levels where it is required, the Gamepad is completely optional if you prefer the traditional experience of using the various other compatible controllers.

The art style plays it safe, but still looks gorgeous on the Wii U, easily delivering some of the best visuals on the system thus far. The 1080p visuals really pop, and the tilt-shift perspective and lighting effects are particularly well done. Everything also moves at a constant and silky smooth 60fps. Conceptually, however, the levels don’t wow quite as much as the Super Mario Galaxy games did. Mario Galaxy felt like a surreal art piece based on Mario games. Mario 3D World just feels like a Mario game.

Mario-3DW-07

But, it’s the first console entry ever to truly deliver the fast paced gameplay of its 2D ancestors in a 3D space, and do it well. It was something I honestly never thought could happen after seeing the direction that Super Mario 64 took back in 1996, opting for more exploration-based gameplay than platforming challenge, largely because of the limits of the technology at the time. But this time, they really did pull it off.

Bringing back the classic Super Mario Bros. 2 lineup was also a fantastic idea. It finally brings Peach back to the forefront, and replaces her with eight fairies as Bowser’s captive prize driving the “plot”. This brings much more variety to levels, thanks to the characters’ unique abilities. It also opens up the difficulty curve for more novice players, who may opt for Peach’s float ability.

Mario-3DW-04
Like 3D Land, this marries the old with the new seamlessly and beautifully. It is also brimming with original ideas. The cat suit adds dimensions to the gameplay that simply haven’t existed in a Mario game before. The ability to climb walls, delay your jump, and attack enemies directly significantly alter the experience, and allow for much more advanced play. Double cherries create clones of each character, and can result in over a dozen player characters on screen at once. Some mechanics are introduced only to be thrown away and never used again.

Almost every single level in the “main” worlds has some kind of unique, original gameplay hook. The true challenge begins much later in the game, and seasoned players will definitely want to experience these levels. The game does a great job of serving every preference and skill level. A casual 4 player free-for-all between friends is just as plausible as a lone speedrunner racing through each level as Cat Toad. Most levels are spacious and open, allowing for much less hectic multiplayer sessions that the chaos that was New Super Mario Bros. Wii multiplayer.

Mario-3DW-03

The soundtrack is in the unfortunate position of following Galaxy 1 & 2. The soaring symphonic melodies have been replaced with a slightly more eclectic selection, switching from orchestral to big band to samba on a whim. It also features almost entirely live instruments, which sound really fantastic. Guitar licks, saxophone solos and string sections simply sound more alive coming from real people, and this really adds a new level of presentation that the 3DS game lacked. It doesn’t reach the heights of the Galaxy games but it succeeds very well at doing something a little different.

Miiverse integration is a fun distraction, offering unlockable stamps as hidden powerups and dotting the world map with other user’s posts. Player ghosts will also populate the levels, which doesn’t quite make up for the lack of online multiplayer, but as least allows for some insight into other players’ technique, and allows for the sharing of secrets much more easily. Actual online multiplayer would be great, but is in reality a pipe dream (no pun intended); if it’s even possible, it is likely Nintendo lacks the know-how or the resources to pull this off without an unacceptable amount of lag present.

Mario-3DW-2

All in all, this game succeeds at almost everything it sets out to do. It caters to virtually every taste, it offers a compelling case for a Wii U purchase, and it finally proves that Nintendo can develop high definition games just as well as anyone. The one thing it does not do nearly as well is make a case for the Gamepad. While certain actions feel nice and add a superfluous charm of sorts, it’s about as necessary as the 3D effect in most 3DS games.

Ironically, 3D Land was one of the only games to actually use the stereoscopic effect to improve gameplay rather than as an aesthetic flair, and it is sorely missed during some of 3D World’s more difficult sections. But all in all this is a near-perfect platformer and one of the best games in the entire series.

The mobile spin-off of Ubisoft’s latest title, Assassin’s Creed Pirates will launch on Android and iOS devices come December 5th.

The spin-off game of the recent Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Assassin’s Creed Pirates will launch on December 5 for iOS and Android mobile devices.

Developed by Ubisoft Paris with a price tag of $4.99, the game allows players to take part in “brutal naval combat” and further explore the Caribbean, Assassin’s Creed style. Like Black FlagPirates places players on a quest for hidden treasure, only this time, players will assume the role of Alonzo Batilla.

In the game, players can recruit and upgrade crew members, outfit their ships and battle other in-game ships head-to-head. Pirates also features the age-old (well, more like series-old) conflict between the Assassins and the Templars, and will see the infamous Blackbeard make a return from Black Flag.

Will you be conquering the high seas in Pirates when it launches on December 5? Let us know.
